Which format should I pick?
WebP or AVIF give the smallest files for photos with the same visual quality — use them if your target (a website, an app) supports them. JPEG is the safest universal choice. PNG is lossless and best for graphics/screenshots with flat colors, not photos.
Is compression actually happening on a server?
Yes — real encoders (including mozjpeg for JPEG) produce meaningfully smaller files than a browser's built-in encoder. Images are compressed on request and never stored afterward.
